The rolling hills of Pursell Farms, in Sylacauga, Ala., are home to one of just three Orvis shooting grounds in the country—and the only one in the South.

Orvis offers guided fly-fishing excursions on two private lakes, and the resort suggests indulging in its 3-mile trail, bocce court, swimming pool, and myriad hiking and walking paths.

“It’s a beautiful piece of property,” says Blake Garrett, GM of Orvis Shooting Grounds at Pursell Farms, of the 3,200 pristine acres just a 2 ½-hour drive from Atlanta. “Our staff does a great job with hospitality and making everybody feel like they’re at home. Whether you’re a novice shooter or experienced, we offer something that everyone would enjoy.” While anyone looking to escape Atlanta’s big-city bustle might fall in love with the charming boutique resort—including an artful 40-room inn and a collection of additional rooms spread across free-standing cottages and cabins—with its award-winning 18-hole par-72 FarmLinks course, The Spring House Spa and a slew of restaurants ranging from casual to elegant, the adventurous outdoor experiences are proving a significant draw.

Pursell Farms hosts the Orvis Game Fair and Sporting Weekend, Nov. 2 and 3, with fly-fishing demonstrations and casting lessons, a sporting clay shooting tournament and more.

With the new Have a Blast package, curated by Orvis, guests can experience some of the highlights of the property. They’ll commandeer a John Deere UTV through rugged Appalachian foothill trails and over streams to stunning Sulphur Mountain lookouts, where the guided ride ends. Then, for a real highlight, they’ll play through the 14-stand sporting clays course, which Garrett describes as “almost like golf with guns,” thanks to a golf cart to ferry shooters from one station to the next. Once outfitted with safety gear and an Italian-made Caesar Guerini or Fabarm shotgun, available for a small rental fee, guests are guided by a trapper (“like a golf caddy”) who facilitates safety throughout and offers pointers to help guests hit the fast-flying clays. It’s the ideal way to pull the trigger on a luxe outdoor experience. Have a Blast package from $465 per person, 386 Talladega Springs Road
