Home & Real Estate,
Ever dream of living in Versailles? Late comedy great Joan Rivers’ former Lenox Hill penthouse is the next best thing.
Thanks to a recent video tour from Open House TV, we get to step inside the opulent abode you’ve got to see to believe. The stunning home first hit the market in May and is still listed for $38 million, in case the video gives you any ideas.
Our tour starts in the great room, which really lives up to its name, offering space for both dining and dancing. The ceilings stand tall at 24 feet, covered in 24-carat gold details from the paneling to the crown molding and even the coat ceiling.
The marble fireplace catches the eye, and our hosts share stories of Rivers’ famous parties. It was in this very space that she entertained icons including Martha Stewart and Princess Diana, and this house is still just getting started.

From the great room, we explore the banquet hall perfect for holidays with family, friends and friends families. The ceiling here is painted to mimic a blue sky with gentle wisps of clouds.
Throughout the home, secret doors seamlessly blend into the ornate walls. The entry cove is covered in rose slab marble, a color Rivers picked herself, claiming it enhanced one’s skin tone with age.
Most exciting of all is the tour of Rivers’ personal bedroom. Filled with natural light from the curved, south-facing window, it boasts its own fireplace and oversized terrace with breathtaking views of Central Park and the surrounding Manhattan skyline.
The large closet is still painted in Rivers’ favorite pink, and the bathroom features a professional-grade vanity where the fashionable comedian prepped herself before appearances.
Our tour ends in the breakfast / sun room, painted pink with wall panels set like Chinese paintings and french doors take you to the terrace, which also include Central Park views. Rivers would often say Marie Antoinette would be happy living in her home, and the decor certainly does its best to match the infamous French queen’s style.
