Style & Beauty,

Nigel Barker knows a thing or two about posing for a good Instagram.

The former judge and photographer on America’s Next Top Model is here to give you his inside tips and tricks on getting that fire photo.

robkim.jpgAs a photographer for over 20 years, Nigel has had the chance to capture so many smiles. And now he’s embarking on a new journey with SmileDirectClub.

SmileDirectClub’s mission is to democratize access to a smile each and every person loves by making it affordable and convenient for everyone.

Because let’s face it. If you didn’t post a photo on insta where you look like the happiest girl in the world, did it even really happen?

Whether you’re the photographer or the subject, we could all use a little picture-taking coaching from time to time.

You know that awkward moment when your friend asks you to take their photo and you are so social media-challenged? So much pressure.

And even worse, when your bestie tries to take a candid pic of you walking down the street of Manhattan, and it’s literally so awkward. Not candid at all.

Indulge in Nigel’s expert picture-taking recs, and you’ll never have to untag yourself from that horrible picture again.

krisconner.jpgTip 1: As a photographer, you should engage with your subject and ask them questions to get them to smile effortlessly.

Tip 2: Be spontaneous and create a distraction to get a candid smile from your subject.

Tip 3: Create a comfortable environment so they feel relaxed enough to show off their biggest smile! Using their favorite props or music can help with this as well.

Tip 4: When taking a selfie, it is important to believe in yourself! As mentioned, be confident, look into the camera, and smile. Make sure your pearly whites are camera-ready!

Tip 5: Be in the moment. Ultimately the most important piece of advice is to be authentic. If you are having fun it will show, and that natural charisma will shine through your picture.

Tip 6: Go with the glow! Pearlescent glowing skin that isn’t heavy with foundation and powder is the way to go. Looking like you have sun-kissed cheeks with a fresh “no makeup” makeup look will have everyone commenting on how you are a real beauty.

Tip 7: Dress for success! Avoid busy patterns like plaids and anything too fashionable if you want your photo to look good now and next year. The timeless look is always best and avoid designer logos displayed right across your chest unless you want to be confused for a billboard in Times Square on NYE.

Tip 8: Give them something to look at - It is all about angles, so one foot over the other, twist the torso, hand on your hip, and look over your shoulder for that red carpet best-dressed pose.

Tip 9: Pose to the beat of your own drum - music is essential to setting the mood so turn up the tunes, get into the rhythm and let your shoulders shimmy. And if there isn’t any music, close your eyes and play that song in your mind for that extra confidence boost.

Tip 10: Take control - have the photographer take your picture from a low angle to give you that heroic winning look - remember perspective is everything!
