Vast open air, billowing clouds, and meandering marshland celebrated at Huff Harrington Fine Art October 19 - November 2, 2018
Kelli Kaufman: Third Coast, Landscapes of the Gulf South is the first solo show in Atlanta by this Louisiana artist in several years. Opening at Huff Harrington Fine Art gallery on Friday, October 19th from 6 to 8 pm with wine and nibbles and runs through November 2nd, the show features Kelli's paintings which conjure an internal longing to immortalize and protect the fragile beauty of Louisiana's disappearing coastline. The opening is free and open to the public.
Born and raised in southern Louisiana, Kelli was first exposed to Louisiana marshland as a child boating in the Vermilion Bay each summer at her family's camp. Boating through the channels of the marsh felt like entering a secret garden, with hidden outdoor rooms of tall grass emerging from the water, alive with birds, insects, and jumping fish. Each "room" evoking a quiet, calm sense of the familiar juxtaposed with an unknown, exciting awakening of discovery around each bend. The tranquility, solitude, and symbiosis of the land, water, and wildlife that she experienced as a child remain the primary source of inspiration in her paintings today.
Vast open air, billowing clouds, and meandering marshland are revealed from the surface of her paintings and come in and out of focus, capturing the romanticism of a southern sense of place. The eye is led to far off vanishing points, often cradled by distant trees soft in color. Line and shape become bolder in the foreground with swaying grassland and water reflections of shifting clouds. Oil and cold-wax give subtle texture, and luminous depth as layers of paint are added, scraped away, and added again. Painted with emotion and a connection to childhood roots, Kelli's paintings conjure an internal longing to immortalize and protect the fragile beauty of Louisiana's disappearing coastline.
“Kelli uses mixed media to produce graphically bold, highly contrasted and colorful marsh scenes that invigorate and romanticize her native Louisiana coastline.” says gallery co-owner Ann Huff. “Her ability to paint in series, while making each one dramatically different, adds a new dimension to her work.”
Huff Harrington Fine Art is located at 4240 Rickenbacker Drive, Atlanta, GA 30342. The gallery is conveniently located off Roswell Road in Buckhead, adjacent to the Chastain Square Shopping Center. More information is available at www.huffharrington.com or by calling (404) 257-0511. Huff Harrington Fine Art is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment.
The 2018 Crystal Ball theme, The Enchanted Empire, represents the freedom from physical and emotional pain and finding peace, happiness and love.
Since its inception, the Crystal Ball has raised more than 9.4 million dollars for arthritis research and programs that directly support the 1.6 million Georgians living with arthritis. One of the biggest challenges is engaging the nearly 10,000 children in Georgia and nearly 300,000 children nationally who are suffering with arthritis. More than 75 percent of these children do not have access to vital information or proper medical care, and they simply do not have a voice in this fight. However, YOU can help give them that voice. Arthritis impacts not only the individual but their family too.
The funds raised at the Crystal Ball will help us provide empowering programs such as Camp AcheAway, a camp created especially for children diagnosed with juvenile arthritis and tailor’s programs to meet their specific needs. They provide the children with a greater understanding of arthritis, help them develop peer-to-peer support, increase their independence and self-confidence while discovering new skills and interests. This powerful camp is a life altering experience and is provided at no cost to the families it serves.
